Title: OruxMaps NG
Post by: orux on May 14, 2026, 12:59:33 PM
I've finally launched OruxMaps NG as a new app to continue development.

This way, anyone who needs to maintain access to all their files, share data with other apps, and access them easily can keep OruxMaps GP.

This version is now under open test in Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.orux.oruxmapsNG

The new features added compared to OruxMaps GP are:
https://oruxmaps.com/oruxmaps_ng_news.html

I needed to get out of this dead end. I know many of you won't like having to pay again, so I'll try to ease the transition for those who can't afford it in two ways, Although I hope the launch offer is good enough that users won't ask me for it ;)

--If you're a recent user (less than two years old), you can email me at support@oruxmaps.com with your Google Play username so I can verify that you purchased OruxMaps NG and are OruxMaps GP users. If so, I can then issue a refund for your OruxMaps GP purchase (note: you will lose this app).

--If you're a long-time user, you can try emailing me at support@oruxmaps.com with your Google Play email address so I can verify that you're an OruxMaps GP user, as I have a (very limited) chance of offering free download codes.

However, I recommend keeping both apps. OruxMaps GP works well, and you might need to use GP in a future NG update if the new one has problems ;)

To make it easier to have both, there's a 50% discount for the next 14 days (the maximum Google Play allows). Go for it!

This version can only work in private storage. For those who want to transfer data from OruxMaps GP to OruxMaps NG, you need to copy the following folders:

a) If you granted the app full access to all files, everything will normally be in Internal Storage/oruxmaps/. Copy from /Internal Storage/oruxmaps/ to /Android/media/com.orux.oruxmapsNG/oruxmaps/

b) A more complicated case: if you didn't grant the app full access and everything is in /Android/data/com.orux.oruxmapsDonate/oruxmaps/, you need to take an intermediate step to apply the process in step a). Go to Settings > App Storage > Grant app full access and move everything to /Internal Storage/oruxmaps/. Then you can apply the process in step a).

A tutorial on how to do this step is available:
https://tronpoonpo.blogspot.com/2024/10/almacenamiento-gestion.html

c) If you are a beta user on the forum and haven't granted the app access to all files, you should have everything in /Android/media/com.orux.oruxmapsbeta/oruxmaps/
Copy from /Android/media/com.orux.oruxmapsbeta/oruxmaps/ to /Android/media/com.orux.oruxmapsNG/oruxmaps/

If you are subscribed to the maps (monthly or annually), I can refund your last payment so you can subscribe to OruxMaps NG.

Sorry for the inconvenience...

__________________________________________________________________________________________

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.orux.oruxmapsNG

https://oruxmaps.com/oruxmaps_ng_news.html

https://tronpoonpo.blogspot.com/2024/10/almacenamiento-gestion.html

Hello Orux!! New OruxMaps NG users need a new board on the forum for this version :) to be able to report the first errors in this open test.
Always moving forward!!
PD: Error logging into drive (minor bugs)

Hi Orux,

Thanks for this great news!

I noted some possible issues I found during the migration GP -> NG.

1. After migrating GP files from /Android/data/oruxmapsDonate/files/oruxmaps/ to /Internal Storage/oruxmaps/ (@Tronpo, thanks for your tutorial), I noticed that my stored tracks lost links to the associated photos. Perhaps the paths to such photos stored in the database has not been updated during the file migration. Is there a way to fix this?

2. I performed step (a) to copy GP files in the NG storage, except for the oruxmapstracks.db file. In order to see in the NG vesion all my tracks previously recorded with the GP version, is it safe to overwrite the (empty) oruxmapstracks.db of NG with the one from the GP version? I think that also in this case the paths of the photos associated with old tracks needs to be fixed.

3. In the NG version, when "Immersive mode" is enabled, I noted that once the bar with top buttons is displayed, it is difficult to hide it. For instance, I need to first tap on the navigation floating button and the close the associated navigation menu, or similarly I need to open the trip computer and the close it. Instead, in the GP version, to make the top bar disappearing it is sufficient to tap on the map.

Thank you for your help and time.
Best regards,
Marco

Hello, in theory it should be safe to overwrite the database (I did) anyway save a backup. Then in the manager at the top right Plus sign, it opens to create virtual folders, you have three dots and the option to synchronize database.
On the subject of the photos, I understand that they also migrated the photos to the NG folder
Greetings

An important note if you copy profile or database from GP to NG, then review the storage configuration of the app, for example with GP profiles the storage will have changed to the directories you had in Gp and this does not correspond in NG and will create conflict

Regarding point 1 the issue of photos, in the app's storage settings Below all there is a "photos" option Checking broken links may be helpful. I've never used it 😅

Hi Tronpo,

I confirm that copying the oruxmapstracks.db file from GP to NG works. Now, in the NG, I can successfully see my previously recorded tracks.

However, photos in the tracks detail are still missing although they are present in the device storage:
- /Internal Storage/oruxmaps/pictures (GP version)
- /Internal Storage/Android/media/com.orux.oruxmapsNG/oruxmaps/pictures (NG version)

The check for broken links did not work.

Thank you. Best regards,
Marco

Driving in car, phone pointed in the way of driving, TMG line (blue) is ok, but view angle line (red) points away from direction of driving and viewing. Shouldn't be both line aligned in same direction in this case? Gps sensor is calibrated.

Standing or leaning on a surface? Look in the settings of sensors the position of the device, it may affect that configuration, another cause may be magnetic interference by some object on the dashboard. Greetings troNpo

There is a very simple test to check if it is a function failure or interference on the phone. In the outdoor phone in hand you can turn the device and check if the line points in the same direction that the device points. Maybe in the car something interferes with the gyroscope / magnetic sensor of the device. Greetings

Hello,

The zoom in Oruxmaps-NG doesn't work like the zoom in Oruxmaps-GP.

When I press the volume down button in OM-NG, the zoom out works correctly.

However, if I press this button repeatedly, the same layer remains displayed. This makes the text indicators unreadable.

Is it a bug or I have missed something in the parameters?

Hello,
First in first : thank you for your help.
I don't use the same way to access to parameters. I use Global Settings/Maps/Zoom settings.
Therefore it seems I have got the good parameters (have a look to the screenshot:

(https://full.ouplo.com/1a/15/iJZ4.jpg) (https://ouplo.com/)

To be more precise when I have met the zoom problem I have decided to import my previous working profile from OM-GP to OM-NG.
Same zoom problem.

Any idea of what's happening?

Concerning the above issue, I fixed it by developing a small Python 3 script (see attached file).

Instead, the issue related to the "Immersive mode" (i.e., impossible to hide the top buttons when tapping on the maps), it still present. I hope, this will be solved in the next release of OruxMaps NG as, although not critical, it is quite annoying.

Thank you.

I'm glad you solved your problem with the links in the photos, professional solution to the script issue!! Regarding the top bar, it seems to be more of a conflict with the operating system of the phone's device. I have oppo LG and I have no problem with any. I hope it can be solved

Hello,

With default zoom at 100% OM-NG works fine. The layer changes every 2 times I press on volume - or volume +.
The problem is that with default zoom at 100% everything is to small. I'm not so young😬!

Perhaps the new option "zoom with speed" can be the cause.

Hi I did several tests and it seems to be going well.
Maybe your profile is corrupted, you can create a factory profile by doing the zoom settings again, default zoom level 300% + zoom with volume keys (and disable the zoom option with volume keys only digital zoom)
Restart the app and test.

Hello,

Your video shows that you have same issue.
You can find below zoom-in and zoom-out cycles for OM-NG& OM-NG.:

OM-NG (not good for me) :
Here is a zoom-in cycle : 300%@09 => 300%@10 => 300%@11 etc...
Here is a zoom-out cycle : 300%11 => 150%@11 => 75@11 => 75@10 => 75@09 => 75@08 etc...

OM-GP (Good for me):
Here is a zoom-in cycle : 300%@09 => 300%@10 => 300%@11 etc...
Here is a zoom-out cycle : 300%11 => 1300@10 => 300@09 => 300@08 etc...

As you can see in my previous video the predefined zoom in this case 300% is maintained at each zoom level... but your comment gave me a clue ... the map of my video is online, are you using an offline map? Offline maps have their own predefined zoom settings, press the three dots next to the map name in the list of offline maps and you will see the option to delete and predefined zoom... by default it is at 100% maybe this is the cause of what is happening to you you can do the test and configure in 300% greetings troNpo

Hello,

In your Youtube video, during zoom-out (second 39 in the time line and after) OM-NG doesn't stay at 300%. OM-NG goes to 75%.
Your OM-NG reacts in the same way as mine.

As you suggest to me, I change default zoom for my Offline Maps to 300% => same problem.
With Online Maps OM-NG reacts same way.

Is it normal for you the work with maps @75 during zoom-out operation?

Regards.

Hello, I have the integration with Strava in OruxMaps NG and GP on the same device, maybe it's a one-time error. From the Strava website itself in configuration you can also give permission to OruxMaps NG. Anyway, Strava login changes. Now the app opens device Internet browser to do the login.

NOTE: You have to go to the Android app information and allow it to open the strava.oruxmaps.com link, if not that link will be captured by the GP version.

hi trompo,

to be perfectly honest, I don't really understand what the two numbers on the zoom function mean (one is digital, and the other is...?)... I looked for an explanation in the manual, but I couldn't really find one... Since you're an expert on the app, I'd appreciate a quick explanation—just a couple of sentences, if that's okay 🙂

We can't do anything, well you have already done what can be done at the user level to report the error. Now the developer has taken note and will correct it for the next update. OruxMaps NG is in open tests precisely to catch this type of error.

Bonjour,

Hello, there should be no changes in this regard, your files created in Sasplanet must also work in OruxMaps NG, the only thing that has changed is that the app will always use the following storage address:

/Android/media/com.orux.oruxmapsNG/oruxmaps/

Hello everyone,

Thanks orux, glad to see NG :).

I guess there is no way to use NG without a google account?
I have several devices without GMS but some have microg installed instead. Does any one know if NG works with microg (logged in with a google account with NG purchased of course). The "old" oruxmaps betas used to work flawlessly without GMS or with microg.

How to migrate from Beta 11.0.2beta13 to NG, if I want to keep all settings I configured before? I guess simply copying ALL FILES from the beta-folder to the NG-folder is not the best idea? And even just copying the XML-file from the preference-folder could be wrong, if the NG-version has different entries that would be lost by overwriting with the beta preference XML-file?

And what about brouter? Should this be uninstalled first, because for the NG-version it's written "The route planner evolves with deeper Brouter integration" ?

Hello, I migrate from beta to NG, as you say copying files in NG folders, also load the beta profile in NG, synchronising database and then correctly assigning the app storage in the configuration, because when using the beta profile the storage addresses do not correspond to NG. Regarding BRouter, you don't have to do anything. The changes are in OruxMaps NG not in the Brouter app (Brouter was also updated and your database needs to be updated so that it works correctly) greetings troNpo

There have been reported cases of problems in the migration of the database when the tracks or waypoint have files such as photos, I recommend exporting these files in kmz and then importing to NG to avoid errors and loss of files and memories.

How can I search for a city, street etc.?
In the waypoint-menu there is "Search Tools" / "Geocoding (online)". I use OruxMaps NG in German language, "Geocoding (online)" is called "Ortssuche (online)". "Ort" means city or town, but the screen that's shown is only for searching POIs within a radius of max. 20km. I can't search for cities like Berlin or Frankfurt, or even street names.

I remember in older OruxMaps versions (I don't remember which versions) it really was possible to search for cities there, without a radius limiting the results. How can I search for cities or streets, or name of a mountain in OruxMaps NG? The main purpose for me is just to move the map to this area quickly, without zooming, swiping and searching for serveral minutes visually on the map.

Being a rare visitor here, I only now realized that OruxMaps NG exists :-) I blindly purchased it, happy to support this project further! Will check it out over the next weeks.

Question: I own the MapBox premium maps subscription in GP. Can I reuse it in NG, or do I need to have a second subscription?

And: Is there development of this feature to be expected? I still have bugs in GP which never were fixed and require me to run workarounds.

Welcome Hauke,
I don't know what exactly your map subscriptions include and what you need, but unless you want 3D maps, you can use the offline-maps from https://www.openandromaps.org/en/downloads for free. No limits, no subscriptions.
Title: Re: OruxMaps NG
Post by: Hauke on July 20, 2026, 10:52:43 PM
Thanks Sandy!

OpenAndro is MapsForge format, which I know works. However, I had limited success in creating my own offline maps in MapsForge format (I could not find tools, and I find the style definitions cumbersome). I was very successful (with tronpos help) to create vector maps in MapBox format, but in order to use MapBox-Format offline maps, you need to "unlock" the rendering engine in oruxMaps by buying the subscription.

In other words: I am not so much interested in the MapBox premium maps, but in the rendering engine.

If you want to know in detail what I do, read about it here: https://projects.webvoss.de/2024/08/03/superatlas-goes-vector-part-ii-creating-and-using-the-offline-vector-maps/

TL;DR version: I create a combined map where I have map data from various official sources like basemap.de, basemap.at or swisstopo, and combine them with OpenStreetMap data for feature rich hiking maps that match exactly my preferences.

Hello!! It is necessary to make a new map subscription, they are different apps so the play Store recognises they cannot be shared, you can request a refund from the developer if you have the annual subscription and you consider it necessary to make the new subscription in OruxMaps NG. In OruxMaps NG the mapbox and sdk libraries have been updated. Regarding the errors, I imagine you mean the work of the local server? I talked about it with the developer when checking the performance of "Mobile Tile Server" (fantastic!!) And he told me that his intention is to improve the performance of the local port for the OruxMaps NG version. You can write to him privately so he can see that there are more users interested in this ... it has a huge potential to create our own 3D offline. Greetings troNpo

Hello, can you explain yourself better? In the toolbar of the planner, to the right of the whole you have settings, within settings you have the option to "include wp entered for the calculation of the route" if it is marked the points used are concerver. If it is unmarked no, in this case the year adds the typical beginning and end points with the respective icons, if you mean that. Greetings troNpo

Thanks Tronpo! Glad to hear that MapBox vector maps implementation continues to evolve. I will reach out to the developer privately as you suggest. Also to discuss if it would be an option to shift from the licensed MapBox to the free open source fork MapLibre, which is largly compatible.

Hola!

Muchas gracias

MapLibre is feature-wise similar to MapBox (As far as I understand, it is a fork, i.e. to some extent basically identical), but license-free. So OruxMaps could offer the MapBox-style vector maps features without additional subscription. You would not get the MapBox maps itself without license - I can only voice my perspective here - these premium maps are of no big value to me. Not sure what others think about them. My interest is having the vector map feature unlocked.

That said: I find ~10€/year extremely fair priced, so if OruxMaps stays with that, no big issue.

https://tronpoonpo.blogspot.com/2024/10/superposicion-de-capas-mapbox.html

OM 12.0.05 has a bug affecting waypoint navigation. It jumps over the first few route points. Even those that remain are strangely ordered as indicated by next/previous waypoint. The same routes in the same device are fine under OM 7.4.28.

I mainly use OM for cycling. I came across a great feature for climbs in Garmin that shows the remaining distance and average gradient in % for the rest of the climb (if you're following a route).

Is something like that available in OM NG?

Yes!! In OruxMaps NG we have a similar function that was developed in the betas. It's called climber sections. I think the slope is expressed in percentage because it is more intuitive, faster to interpret and more useful for those who move on the ground (drivers, cyclists, hikers).

The key is that the percentage directly describes how much the road goes up for every 100 metres travelled, while the degrees describe an angle, somewhat less immediate for most people. 10% means: For every 100 horizontal metres, you go up 10 metres.

That's a direct, almost visual relationship.

On the other hand, saying that a slope is 5.7° doesn't tell you anything about the real effort or inclination if you don't do the mental conversion. PS: just an inexhaustible source of curiosity :) knowledge is relative 😜

Yes... BUT ... even if you do not activate the "experiment" these "section markers" sometimes appear on your routes. They may or may not correspond with paths between route points. They appear as numbers on a white disc within the usual waypoint symbol. but they are not waypoints - they do not respond to controls that hide or show waypoints or route points. Then after you have torn out your hair trying to understand or control them, they may disappear from a route. Sometimes this may be when you load another route on screen. It seems like another bug - unless someone can explain how to control / hide them on screen?

Hello, this has nothing to do with it, they are distance indicators are placed along the route they are shown proportionally to the zoom level. You can configure whether you want to see them or not in configuration waypoint distance indicators and on the waypoint side panel. These indicators have always existed in the app

Strange it does not happen to you, maybe something else I have unknowingly altered?. I load routes (defined by routepoints) for waypoint navigation, and it always happens in OM 12.0.05 NG but never under OM 7.4.28. They were originally from Garmin (via basecamp), imported as GPX, but that should not matter. In the simple example I will try to attach, the navigation is from Home. I do not move but in NG it jumps firstly to Ave (skips initial route points) then after a few seconds to SchoolTk at the end of the route. Trying next /previous waypoint, gives YelgunFd only (in the wrong direction); sometimes Home. It seems even more complicated in more complex routes, sometimes skipping over several route points in testing next / previous; but never finding others near the start.

I have done some more "detective work" on this "Waypoint Navigation" behaviour in OM NG, based on the observations that I do not see the problem in OM 7.4.28 and Tronpo does not see it in OM NG. What has changed, or what is different? A lot has changed in the app of course, but what can the user control?

1. The phone setup:

I use a Samsung A15 with Android 16. Phone settings > Apps > OM NG > Remove Permissions (off); Battery Unrestricted does not solve it.

2. The App setup:

I notice that when route points are listed in next/previous (or in "Waypoints Route") they are in OM NG alphabetical; whereas in OM 7.4.28 they are in correct sequence for the route. This explains why they may be out of the expected sequence for next/previous, but not why some are skipped and missing from that process.

Under "Manage waypoints" in OM NG there is a folder "@All" that was not present in OM 7.4.28. ("@All" has all waypoints from my other folders as well as whatever OM has created). In OM 7.4.28 folder "---" are only the waypoints created by OM on saving a route from a GPX file; marked with the route by "Track" name. I have organised all my own waypoints under other folders. If the "duplicates" in "---" are deleted, the route cannot be used for OM "Waypoint Navigation". (Sadly, OM "Waypoint Navigates" only GPX <wpt> but not <rtept> designated waypoints, but that is another story.)

While trying to make sense of the NG folder paradigm ("@All" and no "---"), I have sorted "@All" various ways (probably alphabetically then by track) and also made new folders into which I copied (not moved or deleted) the duplicate waypoints that OM created on saving a route from GPX files. All of this is logical (to me at least) but it may have something to do with the odd "Waypoint Navigation" behaviour of OM NG for me.

Manually sorting the OM-created points into correct sequence in their unique folder (I have not played again in "@All") did not solve it.

Any other ideas?

Post by: Off-Track1234 on July 31, 2026, 01:50:05 AM
I have just noticed that OM NG seems to have its own ideas about waypoint sorting. I can change to any order I like within a folder. Then when I change folders and return, it has re-ordered however it likes. I cannot predict what it likes, not by Date or Distance or Name or Altitude. Not sure if this has anything to do with the odd "Waypoint Navigation" or if it is a separate problem.

Still seems buggy to me.

The option under Waypoint for "Default Waypoint sort" in OM 7.4.28 has gone in OM NG.

For me, OM NG seems happier with setting Waypoint > Waypoint navigation > Waypoint Distance ((automatic)) not 80 m (recommended).
This (automatic) setting did not exist in OM 7.4.28; but under TTS > Waypoint Distance, I had 10 m (that distance also works for me in NG).

There is still a problem with next/previous failing to respect the route sequence, but I can live with that until the bug is fixed.
Title: Re: OruxMaps NG
Post by: Off-Track1234 on July 31, 2026, 04:40:30 AM
Alas, with these altered Waypoint Distance settings, Waypoint Navigation sometimes works (well enough) for a while, but then it reverts to the problem of skipped and missing waypoints under next/previous.

I like the ability to hide (duplicated) route waypoints in OM NG, but until these bugs in Waypoint Navigation are fixed I must for safety use the stable OM 7.4.28.

Let's hope that the developer can fix the NG waypoint navigation bugs soon.

@Off-Track1234 Investing time in solving and learning is a great decision.
I will try to clarify some things from my knowledge and experience.
Virtual folders are simply for the organization of the database, @all is the sum of all of them, as long as they are not duplicates.
The organization within the folders can be done by dragging and sliding up or down as you wish.
But when they leave and return they will have the computer set to the order criteria again.

OruxMaps has a tendency to offer many possibilities to get things done
Navigation by wp is not my strong point, I have reduced the explanation to the simplest and most practical way I know, to minimize errors.
1- Selection of all points
2- Load points on the map as an active route
3- Start Waypoint Navigation
4- With navigation in progress, I open the on-board computer, the Waypoint list tab
4- With navigation in progress, I open the on-board computer, the Waypoint list tab.
5- Sorted by sliding the WPs in the list in descending order according to my interest

If you want to create a route using the wp.
1- Sort the WPs in descending order in the folder
2 - Load WPs as a route

I hope this is useful to you

Thanks Tronpo, it seems strange that OM NG allows sorting then re-sorts (I think the default is reverse alphabetical), but that is fine as long as it does not mess up the correct sequence for "Waypoint Navigation" of an imported route.

The method that you demonstrate to create a route for "Waypoint Navigation" may work but it is not the only method that should work in OM (according to the app documentation), or that does work in OM 7.4.28.

It is too cumbersome to recreate complex routes by sorting waypoints in OM (or probably in any app for a small screen).
OM must (as advertised) work for "Waypoint Navigation" in routes imported from GPX.
Most users of complex routes will prepare them on the larger screen of a PC, and import them into OM as GPX.

This is so buggy as to be unusable in OM NG. The import works, but the "Waypoint Navigation" is wholly unreliable. It worked fine for the same routes in the same device (with all the same relevant settings that I can find) in OM 7.4.28.

I like the ability to hide (duplicated) route waypoints in OM NG (which is stated by the developer to be the way forward), but until these bugs in "Waypoint Navigation" are fixed I must for safety use the stable OM 7.4.28.

Let's hope that the developer can fix the NG waypoint navigation bugs soon.
The problems are fairly thoroughly documented above, and I am happy to help in any way within my ability.

If you are going to use a route created with Wp as gpx. Import the gpx to the track manager database. From this manager load it to the viewer and use it for navigation, in this way no order should be altered

Some more observations that might assist the developer:

These bugs affect saved routes loaded by Routes > Manage tracks/routes > select one > Follow > Waypoint navigation, as well as imported routes loaded by Routes > Track/route tools > Load KML/GPX file > select one > Waypoint navigation.

The problem with next/previous failing to respect the route sequence is always apparent (in NG).

The problem of skipped / missing waypoints is erratic, so harder to troubleshoot (but even more dangerous to anyone who trusts it). It seems to be triggered when there is a GPS fix and Maps > Map tweaks > Enable/Disable GPS map scrolling is altered, particularly when scrolling is disabled (but not always or immediately). Sometimes it is hard to trigger at all. Maybe some combination of settings/events in NG? Flaky for the user.

Hello!

When you load a GPX file and start waypoint navigation, the app strictly follows the navigation order in which the waypoints appear in the GPX. Make sure that the order in which they appear in the GPX is the order you want to follow (for example, open the GPX with a text editor, or open the trip computer view, waypoint list tab, where you will see the waypoints in the navigation order). It's possible that the order in which they appear doesn't correspond to the order you want to follow them, in which case you should order them using the tools Tronpo mentioned.

If the waypoints are not in the correct order in the GPX file, following the route shown below, you have the option to 'follow the route' instead of navigating by waypoints. This will allow you to navigate by waypoints in the order determined by the route displayed below.

It's possible that the older free version (7.4.28) reordered the waypoints according to the underlying route, but this likely caused the opposite problem: people wanted to navigate using waypoints in the order shown in the GPX file, which seemed more logical, since you don't want to follow the underlying route when navigating by waypoints. Maybe I have to add that option: 'Waypoints navigation reordering the waypoints based on the attached route'.

If this isn't the issue, please attach the problematic GPX file so we can investigate the cause.

I will attach a simple example GPX file, but remember the problem of skipped / missing waypoints is erratic. You may not see it at first. I have not been able to get deeper to the cause (tried GPS interval, waypoint indicator circles etc) but the developer may have more insight. What has changed in coding relevant to straight-line navigation since 7.4.28?

Thanks for the advice on an alternative (roundabout) way. The old way for next/previous order seems more logical to me. And I have a suggestion for improvement. Here is why:

Those who navigate off the beaten track (off-track hikers, boaters, flyers) use a planned route and an app to help with navigation. The app only needs to give distance and bearing to the next route point. The human brain does the remainder: deciding on an actual course based on topography, weather, tides or whatever is relevant, to get to that next route point. GPX (and probably derivative formats like KML) route files have two major sections: <wpt> (an alphabetical list in case someone wants to recreate those designated points as waypoints) and <rtept> (in the sequence used to create the route). Not every <rtept> needs to be designated as a <wpt>, some are just used to mark the intended route. So when we choose "straight-line navigation" (called "Waypoint navigation" in OM) we want to be given the distance and bearing to every <rtept> in correct sequence for the route (not in alphabetical sequence). We do not want to skip any <rtept> that happens not to be a designated <wpt>. That is why we prepared the route - to follow it, in full. Why would anyone want a method that took them over that cliff, or rocks, or restricted airspace, that they went to the trouble of planning a route around? So for straight-line navigation (whatever you choose to call it) please make it easy to get the distance and bearing to every <rtept> in the sequence they are planned (and listed) in the route. Sure we can remember to create a <wpt> for each <rtept> then re-order the <wpt> list somehow (a lot of work in each GPX file), but why force this on us?

Following a beaten track is different of course. For that we want to 'follow the route' as you say; with all the wonderful options in OM for alarms if we wander off the route etc. Is there any scenario in which a user wants to 'follow the route' for straight-line navigation (not vary from straight lines in such a route)? Maybe there is, but I can't think of one. Maybe others will chip in if this is actually useful to them (remember we are talking about straight-line navigation used off the beaten track, not following a route along a beaten track).

Anyway, thanks for considering. Let me know if I can help somehow.

Edit: I see now that KML can be much more variable, depending where it was made. Garmin KML (for example) uses a folder of named 'via points' for what are in GPX called <rtept>s, with a separate folder for line properties including coordinates which correspond to the 'via point' sequence. Some other makers provide nothing equivalent to a named 'via point'; only folders of ' track' or 'path' coordinates (not named). So it is best to stick with GPX; but Orux is said to prefer KML. In any case, it may be harder to set up OM for straight-line navigation of route points in some versions of imported KML files. But Orux is very good at this stuff.

Edit 2: I have removed the GPX file because it is not a problem in the file, it is a problem in the way OM (lately) handles imported GPX files. According to the GPX specification (https://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/), <wpt> is an unordered list, whereas <rte> is an ordered list (in the sequence that defines the route geometry). The problem is that for straight-line navigation of a route in an imported GPX file, OM (lately) expects the <wpt> list to be sorted. For straight-line navigation of the route, OM (lately) uses the <wpt> list order when it should use the <rte> list order. OM 7.4.28 did better, using the <wpt> list in the order of the <rtept>s in the <rte> list. It would be better still just to use the <rte> list, because then any 'shaping points' would be used properly (many GPX makers do not include these under the <wpt list> and OM ignores such points, probably because it does not create them, but this is dangerous for straight-line navigation of an imported route).

There are possibly two underlying problems:

(1) OM offers straight-line navigation of a route only as "waypoint navigation", which is dangerous as described above because it does not correctly follow route geometry.

(2) The concepts of "track" and "route" have become confused (not just in OM). Either can be navigated by software these days. A route should be a sparse set of major turns or locations along a path to be navigated. A track is a much more dense set of points that describe the fine geometry of a path, whether recorded in transit or taken from a map. Navigating (or planning to navigate) a track does not make it a route. Both concepts are useful, but they should be kept different. In navigation of a route, there is still a place for the human brain: to decide on an actual course based on topography, vegetation, weather, tides or whatever is relevant, to get to that next route point.

Happily these things are easily fixed in OM, if the developer is so inclined. Just offer straight-line navigation of a route from <rte> in imported GPX files. And understand that the concepts of <trk> and <rte> are usefully different when creating GPX files (this is best practice (https://www.topografix.com/gpx_for_developers.asp) in GPX, as it uses the GPX tags the way they were intended).

PS Orux:

I tried 'follow the route' as you suggested. It gives me no bearing (top dashboard) and no ability for next/previous (button bar or route / navigation options). So it seems not to help for the purpose described above.  :'(

I have just spent more time staring at the phone screen, trying to glean any more clues.

So, if this is a clue and allowing for it being erratic, it seems to have something to do with GPS being on. Maybe not much help, but the best I can see.

I have GPS only ("Improve Location Accuracy" off) in Android settings, even though OM NG demands the "precise location" permission, even when "Location Accuracy" is off. There is no other signal where I hike, so I use flight mode then to maximize battery life.

  • The "disappearing next/previous waypoint" symptom is very erratic, but sometimes frequent. It comes and goes without human intervention.
  • It happens in Fast, Default and Power-save GPS modes.
  • It often (but not always) coincides with a pop-up "GPS tracking on" though there has been no human intervention with the GPS function.
  • It does not coincide with changes to satellite signals reported in the OM "GPS accuracy" tool available as dashboard widget.
  • Sometimes, but not always, it can be triggered by using the GPSTest tool or Dis/Enable GPS map scrolling.
  • I have never seen it with "Waypoint navigation" on and GPS off (the mind boggles at what such a combination should mean to a navigator).

Hello, and the GPS sensor settings? How do you have it configured? And battery restrictions always disabled for OruxMaps

Battery restrictions for OM off in Android. Tried various OM GPS settings as stated above.

The "disappearing next/previous waypoint" symptom is not prevented by the "Force full GNSS measurements" option to prevent power cycling (hidden in Android developer options https://barbeau.medium.com/gnss-interrupted-the-hidden-android-setting-you-need-to-know-d812d28a3821 (https://barbeau.medium.com/gnss-interrupted-the-hidden-android-setting-you-need-to-know-d812d28a3821)).
It repeatedly arises not when GPS is turned on, but when a GPS fix is first obtained (there can be enough delay in GPS power save mode, especially inside with restricted GPS signal penetration).

OK, results of more testing.

The "vanishing waypoints" bug usually resolves out on the trail (away from any listed waypoint in the route).

The next/previous bug (actually by design according to Orux) is still crap (sorry, technical term) for off-track hikers.

As near as I can tell:

So in OM NG we have lost the ability to use OM as a convenient navigation helper app for straight-line navigation (of a planned route, off the beaten track). This exists (fairly well) in OM 7.4.28.

Sure, we could spend all the time needed to reorder the <wpt> section in every imported route GPX to match the order in the <rtept> section. Or we could reorder the waypoints from every imported route GPX in some other cumbersome way in OM (avoiding all the ways that re-order to the default when we leave the window). But we buy software to take care of such stuff. Computers are good at sorting.

Orux, please give us back the ability to use OM as a convenient navigation helper for straight-line navigation (of a planned route, off the beaten track). Even better if you take this opportunity to implement it for <rtept>s, not <wpt>s, as discussed above.

Thank you for this manific app. I have been using Oruxmaps for 8 years. I have bought the Disco Maxi 4 in 1 beacon (successor to Tempo Disc) https://bluemaestro.com/products/new-disc-maxi-4-in-1-with-alerts-temperature-humidity-barometric-pressure-and-dew-point-sensor-and-logger Both in Oruxmpas GP, and especially in NG, I do not read the beacon and the app closes the moment I activate it. Is this model supported in NG? Thank you very much for everything.
Title: Photo waypoints

Is there any way to view the photos of photo waypoints directly in OruxMaps NG?
The only way I know takes 4 clicks and the photo needs to be viewed in an external photo-app. Could you implement anything more convenient? Maybe double-clicking the photo-thumbnail on a route could directly open the photo in full screen / zoomable (directly visible in OruxMaps NG)?
