Title: New beta 11.x version
Post by: orux on May 17, 2025, 07:51:00 AM
Sorry for the delay.

We're going to resume beta testing before the Google Play version update, to see if Google will let me.

This version is a preview of the next one to be released on Google Play.

What's new:
--> Added a richtext editor to include rich text in waypoint and track descriptions.
--> Organize segments/lines/polygons into internal folders, in a tree-like manner. Similar to the 'folders' in KML files.
--> New features (not for everyone) to support search and rescue teams.
The manuals:
https://oruxmaps.com/sar_es.pdf
https://oruxmaps.com/sar_en.pdf

This feature is enabled in Settings > Search and Rescue Tools. If anyone is interested in this type of tools, please contact me!

The beta version:

:beta2
-->some bug fixes

:beta3
-->Major internal changes due to Google Play's changes to native libraries, which must be aligned to 16k. This has required recompiling all native libraries. Support for older POI databases has been removed, as they used native libraries that were impossible to recompile. Affects tiff maps, in addition to mapbox maps (which cannot be tested in beta)
-->Added a new button, which can be added to the sidebar, to show/hide all waypoint names.
-->Added some additional value to periodic messages.
-->some bug fixes

:beta4
-->update mapsforge to 0.25 library level
-->added 'circular trip' option to the route planner (Calculate a circular trip, of xx km, starting from the last point entered).

:beta9
-->minor bugs corrected
-->modified barometer filter to reduce noise
-->improved support to geo: uris, adding more geo: formats

:beta10
-->Strava login changes. Now the app opens device Internet browser to do the login.
NOTE: You have to go to the Android app information and allow it to open the strava.oruxmaps.com link, if not that link will be captured by the GP version.
-->other minor changes

:beta11
-->update mapsforge and vtm libraries to 0.27

:beta12
-->bug correction with route navigation far from route false positives

:beta13
-->bug corrections
-->minor change with garmin maps. Added shadow to the texts/names, no need of label background settings

Welcome back @orux :) You've been missed already and concerns have raised because of your long absence. Hope you're fine. Just in case this whole project is getting too much for you, don't hesitate to ask for help - you're not alone. I'm sure it's possible to find several developers who could assist you when needed.

Regarding the new feature for search and rescue teams:
Probably the "alpine clubs" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alpine_clubs are a good place to go. Maybe we users of this forum could contact the local alpine club of our country / region and ask if this is something they would like to test / use?

Thanks for your great work Jose, and all the best for you and your family.

Hello orux !! The organization of files in a tree is really useful and necessary.
I see that it fails in the mass modification or am I not understanding it well ?

It would be very interesting if you could apply something similar to virtual folders, such as being able to organize subfolders within folders, and even beyond that the same track can belong to several virtual folders, this is a long-time trend of users.
I mean without having to duplicate the tracks so that they are in different folders.

We continue to move forward!!

PD : The waypoint manager does not include the tree organization in the bulk modification.

Hello orux !! The weather forecast needs better contrast between the background and the text to improve visibility.

A good advance to be able to configure the time interval in the forecast, and even better to be able to make the query in any location on the map.

Best regards

Hello,
I've discovered other new features which are both interesting and useful:

@Orux
In dark mode the text of the weather forecast is very difficult to read, especially for the brightest hours. Maybe you could change the background or the text color as it was in previous versions. (Tronpo was faster than me once again!)

As always: thanks for your great work!

I've discovered other new features which are both interesting and useful:

  • map tools - highest/ lowest altitude points (imho the centre and the radius should also be shown on the map)
  • overlay options - show lat/lon grid
  • weather forecast now useses the open meteo api. Now the forecast is not limited to the current position.
[/list

according to show lat/lon there is a minor discrepancy in menu where text in command line is not switched between show/hide.

The menu says 'show lat/lon grid' even when the grid is already shown instead of 'hide ...' (like the other grids).

thank you @Lenz to deal with this MINOR discrepancy which I started - it is more a cosmetic matter than a bug.

in my case it is not happening only in top menu - it is in both menu (top and left)... in @Tronpo's video text 'show/hide' change in my case 'show'stays all the time (regardless a grid is enabled)

ps/ guys, is it possible to upload video directly to this forum?

Thanks for the suggestions.

What's most discouraging are the constant changes in Google Play policies and the implications they have. And the difficulty of adapting to the ways of responding, removing permissions,... sometimes it makes you want to give up.

The clubs are a good way to start. Let's see if I can test them with some well-known groups and see if interest increases (or not).

There is no rush for this, you have already made a lot of progress in these last three batches of betas to complicate it more.

A note about the climber sections, in the voice messages when entering a section the app says "entering a climber section" it would be very interesting that if the user edits and names the sections, the app said the name of said section, example "entering the section cuesta del muerto"

In the settings of Visibility of the route is not recognized by the app, is this what is expected ?

This does not occur when the file is used as a path to follow, the visibility setting of the path is not overridden with quick editing of a segment.

Hi Orux and welcome back,

In dark mode, the text on the dashboard (computadora de viaje) would be much more readable with a black background instead of gray, creating better contrast with the white letters. The same applies to the weather forecast section that now is even too gray.

Would it be possible to implement this adjustment or add an option to set a black background, similar to the existing feature for graph backgrounds?

Thank you in advance for your consideration ;)

You know what? As I said here https://oruxmaps.org/forum/index.php?topic=44500.msg59643#msg59643 Google is right. I understand it's frustrating, but they are still right; if I don't want other apps being able to mess with the OM folder I cannot pretend OM to access other apps data. Other apps (Locus to make no names) just followed Google instructions on day one, using the private folder + the media folder for some stuff and had no problems since. Of course initially some users complained, rightfully so, and the developers just published a full file access version apk outside the Play Store (which is still required for license authentication) to ease the transition. Just do that once and forever.

The problem is that over a year ago, Google Play authorized the app to use the all files access permission. With that permission, the model was twofold: anyone who wanted to grant it that permission could continue using the old file system in the root of the storage. Anyone who didn't could use the app's private folders. The cost of adapting all this was significant. But after 8 months, in a simple update, Google Play said no, you no longer had that permission. I couldn't update, and if I wanted to update, I had to remove that permission. And I also had to update 100% of the users at once, all at once :) without any option of doing it progressively....

If they had told me the first time that they weren't giving me that permission, believe me, it would have saved me a ton of work and headaches. Others, not to mention names ;) may have more resources than I do to deal with these types of situations.

My complaint is mainly about the way they treat those of us who have spent our entire lives developing and bringing value to Google Play. I think I was one of the first to create apps for Android. That's useless. We are like garbage, messages that seem threatening, ultimatums,...

Anyway, I just installed the latest beta and it still asks the permission to access all files, at this point I suppose that dialogue box should be removed.

I think the the measure tool background (when attached to the dashboard) should follow the above setting, instead it is a fixed half transparent gray. It's not really a problem but it would look better.

To be honest I was very surprised that they gave that permission to OM, when even file managers don't have it, it was probably just an oversight.

I was already comfortable without that permission, but after seeing several apps, some with similar features to OruxMaps, that had it, I requested it because, as always, there were many users protesting the switch to private storage.

I was also surprised. What I didn't expect was that after a few months they would change their minds, giving me no room to maneuver, no time to adapt, nothing.

Well, maybe I shouldn't have requested it, but it wasn't my fault I got it.

They could have given me at least a few months to adapt, first by warning me that the permission was expiring, then by migrating... They're already soulless.

QuoteAnyway, I just installed the latest beta and it still asks the permission to access all files, at this point I suppose that dialogue box should be removed.

It shouldn't appear.

What should appear is:

a) If you're an old user reinstalling and the app sees that the oruxmaps/ folder exists in the root of the public storage, it will notify you that you can move resources from there to the private folders within the app.

b) If you're upgrading from a version that had access to all files (which it won't be able to do now), it will offer a migration tool, from public to private storage.

Hello @orux !!
Testing the rich text editor, I find this option for descriptions very interesting gives it a plus, plus being able to add photos gives another approach to the description.... Maybe a larger description box to see the whole picture (you don't need to :)
When we add photos in the description they are not exported (kmz), if I import that file again, the photos no longer appear in the description.
Is this possible? There is a file that supports the photo, I understand that it does not.

Hi @Orux in the full interface when we go to maps > add Mapsforge maps, this just takes them to the Mapsforge repository.
Ideally, it would give us the option to the three most well-known Mapsforge platforms, as you do both on the side board (unified interface) and on the other two more basic interfaces.
So that it is more visible to all levels of users.

Rainfall: light, moderate and violent intensity
How can it be all at once?
Something similar happens with clouds:
Mostly clear, partly cloudy and overcast skies

It's a bit confusing, looking at the api documentation it seems to give us the information of different layers of the atmosphere...

Best regards!!

Hello!! Another detail about the rich text, when you use the option to add photo using the camera button the native camera always opens, it does not matter if we have selected in The configuration use "opencamera-app", this should only affect the use of the photo waypoint ?

Hello!!
With the latest versions, the graphics of the tracks are reducing their size more and more, when we place the terminal in landscape mode.
Compared to the oruxmaps version 7.4.28 I think it loses ease and comfort in the analysis.

On the other hand, now when loading several routes in the viewer you only see 2 colors primary route and
secondary routes.
Previously we had a 3 color for 3 route, now all routes that are not the main one are shown as secondary.

I know the possibility of defining the color of each route from the track properties, I simply comment on the difference with the previous behavior.
Best regards!!

I noticed today that there are changes in the weather section. It's very nice that the forecast is made at the center of the map and the new service takes in account elevation which is very useful for mountain areas but uncommon to find in weather apps. Forecast accuracy to be confirmed :-)
That said I think the interface could be improved a bit showing daily forecast and move to hourly when the user taps on a specific day. This would allow to see the next days at a glance and then have the detailed view if needed. As an alternative I'd place at least a separator between days; for example use the date as header and then just the hours without repeating the day 24 times which is hard to read especially because the day is placed after the hour.

Hello Orux,
The new beta 11.0.2Beta2 does not work on my Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G.
I upgraded today my Samsung from the old 11.0.0Beta10. Apparently the upgrade went smooth, but then at the first test, I am having at least these 2 blocking problems:
1) Barometric altimeter cannot be calibrated
2) GPS position is not achieved
Therefore, as-is, the application is totaly unusable.

Kindly be aware that in May the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G received a major OS upgrade, moving to Android 15 and One UI 7.0.

All the best, Andrea

Hello Tronpo and Orux, no, I didn't try a new installation from scratch. But, today the app is running fine.
I don't know what could happen in these days to fix the problem, but I can guarantee I didn't do anything. I just did normal phone maintenance and applications updating as available.
So, concluding, I do not know what was blocking at the time.

Hello everyone, and to Jose in particular,
If I understood correctly (but I am not sure, and that's why I ask confirmation), the application can ONLY access the files in the "private" (Android/data/[Appname] and/or Android/media/[Appname]) folder
As a result, it is no longer possible to share in particular MAPs and DEM files between the current version and the BETA version ? This is particularily annoying due the huge size of such files....
Is that right ?

I understood that this limitation (if it really exists...) is due to Google and not to Orux.
But on the root, as much I understand that Google prohibits an app from accessing private data of another app, as much I do not understand what may be the reason to prevent an app from accessing files in a folder other than those managed by the Android system (eg the /oruxmaps folder). I could understand that it does not allow writing access, but why prevent reading access ???

It is right and irremediable.
For security reasons, I imagine that reading cannot be allowed either.
The only case within OruxMaps (beta) of using files from another folder is the remote use of vector maps such as Mapsforge and themes

I add that in order for oruxmaps to use some files like the others, it has to have direct access it cannot use them in a remote folder, that is, from another app
The same goes for maps, mbtiles etc

Actually, I understand less and less : OM beta indeed is able to read files anywhere, since loading of a GPX or KML layer can be done from any folder....
Why NOT the Maps a/o Dem, etc...

Edit : And why to be able to get such access (in "not private" folders) for MapsForge maps and Themes only, and not for other maps ?
Once again, I understand (not even sure...) these limitations for files that OM is supposed to update, but MAPs and DEM files are "by nature" Read ONLY files...
Really NOT understandable....

Laurent, focus on the big picture. Initially Android left maximum freedom to developers and users, eventually too many rogue apps pushed Google to take action, and it's crystal clear now that the future is an Apple-like walled garden ecosystem. Due to the complexity of the Andorid ecosystem we are currently in a transition phase, you can actually still use apps that have full access, but those cannot be uploaded to the Play Store. It's pretty easy to imagine that in a future even sideloaded apps will be blocked from accessing other app's data. Just accept that, searching for shortcuts can only backfire. I know it's an hassle but good SD cards are like 1€ for 10 GB, get a big one and be done with that; at least that's what I did.

Regarding the folders, /Android/data is where apps should store settings and no other app can access that. /Android/media is where they can store multimedia files so that they are protected, but with the right permissions other apps can have limited access. IMHO Jose is already taking risks allowing the users to store settings in the media folder, I wouldn't be surprised if this causes problems in the future; personally I would just put maps and dems there, feels safer. Everything else should be managed with import/export funtions from within the app, users should not mess with settings files; it was a necessity ten years ago, now it's no more. That said, I don't see the Beta able to access everything.

Hello Maki,
thank you for your answer, I agree with.... up to a certain extent !

About the SD card, yes I agree it's a good and cheap solution.... provided it's feasible ! Less and less smartphone have a place for SD cards... and in particular, mine (Samsung S23) do not have....
And even when it's feasible to add a SDCard, it's not always the case feasible to use it "seamlessly" with native file system. In my previous smartphone (Samsung A3), I had a SDCard port, but SDCard was "seen" as a specific group of folders, and then the files that have to be in /android/data/... or /android/media/... could NOT be stored on the SDCard...

About the need to protect apps data from other (potentially rogue) apps, I agree it's a real need, but ONLY for all that is "internal parameter" data. But for what is pure "user data" (as maps, dem files, cursors, tracklogs, etc.. in OM), it should be user's responsibility to choose if he wants to store them in a "protected area" or not , and have them (potentially, with "microscopic" risk...) "vulnerables".

An finally (last but not least), what I definitely cannot understand is why (and how ?) OM is able to read maps in mapsforge format, and associated mapstyles, from other folder than /android/data/... or /android/media/..., but not other maps. Or import GPX/KML files also from everywhere.

PS : I agree also with you when you consider that if, in this global picture, maps, dem, etc... have their place in /android/media, this shouldn't be the case of "settings" that should be rather in /android/data

Hello!

Preference data, although located in Android/media/, is encrypted. It's only decrypted if it's shared (in which case, personal data is extracted).

It's true that there's potentially sensitive data in other folders, such as photos and the Tracks database. But putting anything in Android/data/ now (and worse in the future) makes it nearly impossible for users to access it. And of course, there are quite a few users who manipulate that database directly!

There's also the option to give the user the choice... :)

I haven't seen where anyone else has posted this issue with the release of the beta v11.0.2beta2 and I still get the same error message after installing the latest beta v11.0.2beta3.  This happens on both my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 phone and on my Samsung A9+ tablet. When I first turn on Orux 11.0.2beta3 I get the popup screen, "This is an old beta version; it is near to stop working! Go to Google Play and check if there is anew version"; and I have to click on Cancel or Accept to make the popup go away. The next time I turn Oruxmaps on I get the same popup every time. This happens on both my phone and tablet every time.

I believe this popup only starting happening after v11.0.2beta1 had been out for a long time and was updated, but started showing up immediately when v11.0.2beta2 was initially installed soon after it was released, and now continues to happen with the new release of v11.0.2beta3.

Anyone else seeing this?  It did not use to be the norm until a beta version had been out for quite some time.

Hello it is not a mistake, the betas are test versions and have an expiration date.
The official version of Google play does not expire.
The message will continue to appear in the beta version until it is no longer operational.
Until a new beta version.
Beta versions are for testing and reporting.

Well, it is not my case, nor that of other users who are in a group, until last week the expiration message did not jump in beta 3.
And with beta 2 it also took a while before it showed the message
What is true is that in these betas the period of life has been reduced.

Ok, Thanks for letting me know.  It seems that the beta versions used to go about 6 months before the expiration notice would appear.  I believe beta v11.0.2beta3 was released on July 9 so if I am understanding correctly what you said, then v11.0.2beta3 went about 1 month for you, before you got the about to expire pop up window.

Correct, it seems that José has reduced the expiration time.
For me it would be ideal if we could credit the purchase of the GP version in the beta version and remove the expiration of it.
To avoid waiting for an update in the play store, and that the beta It wouldn't be to have a free premium app.

I completely agree with this suggestion. I really hope Jose reads this ... We have already written a few suggestions here on how to stay on the beta version, because the GP version is somehow a step backwards comparing to the beta.

Completely agree.  I would expect that anyone who follows Oruxmaps.org most likely already has the GP version of Oruxmaps and for those that don't follow Orux here online but use it somewhat regularly also have already paid for the GP version, at least the 15-20 individuals in my group have already paid for the GP version.

Hello Orux,
it is obvious that the result of the 'circular trip' function is not a route which is exactly as long as entered, as it depends on the routing profiles and the ways in the area around the starting point. But in my case the route is always about five times as long as the value entered.
In addition to this bug, the circular trip can not be recalculated when you change the routing profile - it simply disappears from the map.

Best regards

It seems there is a problem when making a "Composite" map when using 2 or more "Offline" maps.  The problem I am encountering is that my base-map, a Mapforge Map (.map file), does not get added as a "Layer" when you click on "Add Layer" when creating a Composite Map.  The foreground map a Garmin vector map does get added as a Layer, but when you select the newly created Composite map to display, all you see is the Garmin map with a blue background and the Mapforge Map does not appear at all.  This is something that started happening sometime with beta version 11, not sure which beta 11 version it started with.

The Garmin maps and the Mapforge Maps in question do display correctly as a "Composite Map" in the GP version of Oruxmxaps v10.7.4 GP.  I have tried 4 different Garmin type maps with 4 different Mapforge maps that all do display correctly as Composite Maps in the GP version, and also used to work correctly in the older beta versions prior to the release of beta versions 11, but now none of my Composite Maps display correctly with Mapforge Maps using the newer beta version v.11.0.2beta4.

I have played around with changing several of the map settings to see if that would help and so far nothing has made a difference where the Mapforge map will display when combined as a "Composite Map".  This seems to be a problem just since the new beta 11 versions were released.  The Mapforge Maps will display correctly when they are used as a stand alone map and not as a Composite Map.

Has anyone else experienced this when making a Composite map, using a Mapforge map as 1 of the maps?  Was wondering if I am missing some setting in the settings with the newer v11 beta versions, or if this is a bug in the beta v11 of Oruxmaps?

Quote from: Explorer on August 24, 2025, 10:26:12 PMIt seems there is a problem when making a "Composite" map when using 2 or more "Offline" maps.

Hello, do you have the vtm viewer activated?
If you have activated the vtm viewer, either in the map settings, or in the Mapsforge settings, in both settings at the bottom is the checkbox to check uncheck.
The VTM viewer does not support composite maps.
My Composite Map  are working correctly in the beta.

Best regards.

I use Composite Maps on both my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 phone and also on my Samsung A9+ Tablet and am getting the same results on both with the beta version.  I did check to make sure that VTM map viewer is not activated/checked in Maps/Mapsforge and also in Maps on both devices. Still does not display my Mapforge (street map) as the basemap.  I get a blue screen in place of the Mapforge basemap, but my Garmin type map does appear.

When I am creating the Composite Map and I select the Mapforge Map as my 1st map (basemap) of the 2 maps to create the Composite Map, the Mapforge Map name appears in the upper right corner of the screen as if the Layer has been added but I only see a blue screen with the 2 arrows that form a circular pattern being displayed all over the screen (at all zoom levels), where I used to see the Mapforge street map at this point.  I do see the Mapforge street map displayed, at this point when doing this in the GP version.

Thank you.

Quote from: Tronpo on August 25, 2025, 07:53:36 PMA question, what theme are you using for Mapsforge Maps?

I don't have any Mapsforge themes to select from.  The only 1 listed is "Default mapsforge theme" and it is active.  The "Mapbox Maps" is grayed out.

I am doing the same thing you are in your video except for your basemap you are using a .osm file and I am using a .map file.  The .map files is what I am not getting to work any more in Composite maps in the beta version.

Hello, I suspect it's related to the default theme, that's why I asked you.
I have Mapsforge .map files from the Mapsforge Repository, Freizeitkarte, and OpenAndroMaps.
All of them are .map files.
None of them display correctly with the default theme—most likely something went wrong when updating the Mapsforge libraries in this beta version.
You can check it yourself: place the file I've attached here into the "maptyles" folder of OruxMaps beta.
Then, in the Mapsforge theme selection, choose this file named "default" and you'll see that Mapsforge maps do work in composite mode.

@Explorer If you allow me a suggestion, try the Mapsforge maps from Openandromaps with their Elevate theme, they have much more information.
And for composites they are ideal, because instead of using them as a base layer you can use them as an overlay, and then you can remove the background of the map from the selector, taking advantage of the information from the layers of roads and points of interest on other maps.
I'll give you an example.

Best regards!!

@ Tronpo, Thank you very much for the informative videos and information.  I'll have to play around with the Openandromaps and Elevate theme when I get some more time.

What I have realized, not only do the ".map" map files not display/show up in my Composite maps; but the ".map" map files do not display in any of my maps, even as a map by themselves.  I hope this gets fixed in the release of the next beta version of Oruxmaps. From OpenAndroMaps, I downloaded the USA / South-Mid-oam.osm.map file for the US and it does not display either.

I'm glad to hear this, Mapsforge themes are the file that tells the map what information it has to display, really a Mapsforge map is not useful without a theme.
Just keep in mind that each Mapsforge map will display the correct information when you use a theme designed for it
I mean the Openandromaps themes for the Openandromaps map, the Freizeitkarte themes for the Freizeitkarte maps.
Greetings and enjoy!!

What I mainly use the Mapsforge maps for is in a Composite Map where I can have my transparent custom Garmin Off Highway Vehicle vector trail map displayed and also be able to see roads and streets when I get into towns.  I pretty much use this all over the United States for various OHV Trail Systems, just for my own personal use.

What maps is your ExMaps Theme best used with?  It works great with the OpenAndroMaps. I didn't know if you created it for a particular map?

Sometimes I will take a .jpg picture of a paper trail map for a particular location and georeference that .jpg map and use it as a map overlay to navigate by.  I haven't seen a way to change the transparency of the .jpg overlay map so I can view my other map/s underneath the overlay, is this is even possible?  I do quite often use trails/tracks/waypoints as a .gpx or .kml overlay in my custom map/Composite map since that doesn't hide my other maps being displayed.  Is there a way to change the transparency of a .jpg overlay map where you can partially see through it and also view the map underneath the overlay map.

EXMaps theme It is created for Openandromaps.

Ask you about georeferenced maps, if you are georeferenced with oruxmaps GP , It's very easy to handle transparency. This item is old but the current operation is the same as now.
Just load the map as a layer Tap on the overlay and the transparency slider comes out.
I leave you here the post.

I'm currently using v10.7.4 GP, but I've noticed it lacks the "Climber Segment Zoom" in the graph when starting a climb, that was available in the v11.x Beta.

@Orux or @Trompo, are there plans to bring these v11 improvements to the Google Play release soon? The beta features significantly improve the experience for climbers.

Thanks in advance

note: in the climber segments, please consider displaying the gradient in percentage (%) instead of degrees, as it is much more intuitive and commonly used.

Looking forward to the release of version 11 for the zoom on each climb. As I mentioned, the beta features significantly improve the experience for cycling.

I actually purchased OruxMaps GP when climb segments were introduced (before that, I was using Jepster, which includes that feature). So @Orux, listen to your users! I'm certain many others appreciate this as much as I do. Please release v11!  ;)

Helo Orux!!
Beta9 we go back to work :) and we leave stories. There are changes in the search for online pois, very interesting. If I have checked the save searches box and the dynamic search box. When returning to the map and exceeding the search range previously established when doing the search, a new automatic search should be done, right?

With the previous versions of Oruxmaps I could search for an address. With the new version I can only search for pois.
The search for pois I do only with the poi-data provided by osm. To plan my tours at home or to find a town I want to zoom in fast, I used the online-search. This no longer works.
Please give me back this search-option.
Thank you

Yes, this is the expected behavior; until you remove the added layer from the map, it should search if you move the map.

Hello José,

Thank you for your excellent work on OruxMaps — the app is incredibly powerful, and I really appreciate the huge number of available settings. I use it regularly for running, hiking, and cycling.

I would like to ask whether it might be possible to add a feature similar to ClimbPro, showing upcoming climbs during an activity (remaining distance, gradient, profile, etc.) in real time, even without loading and following a GPX file. I already use DEM data and the ascent analysis performed when importing a GPX track, but having automatic climb detection during live activities would be extremely useful.

Additionally, would it be possible to implement automatic speed calibration for running using an ANT+ speed sensor? My sensor is correctly detected by OruxMaps, but the speed is not calibrated accurately. Automatic calibration—similar to what Garmin devices offer—would greatly improve running accuracy.

I will also test the latest beta version to see how the new features evolve.

Thank you again for your work and your time.

[/cita]

Hello, OruxMaps offers a function equivalent to climbpro "climber sections" currently not available in the GP version but you can try it in the beta version. In the case of OruxMaps this function is conditioned to follow a track to be able to give the information of the ascents. The case of Garmin is different, it does not need to follow a track because the information of the ascents is implemented on the map, Garmin has a database of the ascent sections made by its users that it incorporates into its maps that are then activated according to the proximity and direction of the GPS. I encourage you to try the function in the beta version it works very well, I leave you here a small guide on its use and configuration https://tronpoonpo.blogspot.com/2024/10/tramos-del-escalador_26.html

Hello, in the OruxMaps introduction screens it says directly "oruxmapas is not perfect" and I have not read anywhere that it is. The GP version works "correctly" and obviously has failures, that's why the beta version exists, some failures of the GP version were reported and these beta versions have been corrected and tested by the testers for a next update. Hello José,

Thank you for your quick answer and the link to the tutorial, it is very useful and I will do some more testing. According to your reply, "Garmin has a database of climbs made by its users, which it integrates into its maps, which are then activated based on proximity and GPS direction."

In the "climber" section, we can already modify the "ascent" section, rename it, and save it in the GPX file, which is great.

Would it also be possible, using your climb editing tool, to manually save climb sections in a special directory in GPX, XML, or database format in order to create our own climb section database and be able to display our favorite climb sections when we are not in track or route tracking mode? For my part, I had manually created a large GPX file some time ago with my favorite climbing sections, and I can load it into Oruxmaps and see all the climbing segments drawn on the maps + the description/name such as "+50m D 1.05k P 4.7%," Unfortunately, when I enter a climbing section, the special climbing screen does not appear. Below is a small extract from my climbing section file:<trk>
    <name>+50m D 1.05k P 4.7%</name><desc>+50m D 1.05k P 4.7%</desc>

Hi Orux,

I have noticed an issue in the track manager related to handling files that contain only waypoints. I know this is not the ideal use case, but I use the track manager as a kind of database to organize files made up of multiple points, which I later load as overlays.

• Issue observed
When selecting two point-only files and using the "Join tracks" tool, if I choose to name the resulting file, that name is *not* respected when the new file is created.
However, when performing the same operation with files that contain segments, the predefined name *is* applied correctly.

• Simple solution
Allow the track manager to handle point-only files in the same way it handles segment files, ensuring consistent behavior in all cases.

• More complete solution (proposal)
Create an alternative database, something like a **"layer manager"**, where both segment files and point files can be managed, and which acts as a staging area before loading them as overlays.
This would provide a clearer and more specific workflow for these types of files.

• Current behavior that may confuse users
The track manager currently allows loading **dynamic (online) KML files**.
These files do not contain points or geometries—only a URL—so they should *not* be loadable through the track manager.
When trying to use them as overlays, they do not work, which can confuse users.

It is important to note that these dynamic KML files *do* work correctly when loaded directly from Android into the map viewer.
For this reason, if a future **layer manager** is implemented, it *should* support managing these online KML files.

I hope I have explained this clearly.

Regards!

Hello Orux!! When I have a track loaded in the map viewer pulse on it the segment option menu opens, within the quick editing options, the function to change the thickness does not work. On the other hand, if it is loaded as a layer, if it works, the thickness change as a quick editing. Greetings

Hello everyone,

Quick question: I went for a ride using a GPX file with route tracking and the option to track uphill segments enabled. Everything worked perfectly until I took a detour of a few kilometers. The app then calculated a new route, probably using Brouter, but once I was back on the main road, the uphill segments no longer appeared. Did I configure something incorrectly? Should I disable the automatic route search option, or is it mandatory to always follow the GPX file since the app knows the exact number of uphill segments? Thanks in advance.

Best regards.

Saludos cordiales. [/cita]

Hello, according to my experience the app also calculates the climber setches for the new route created, it is possible that these new climber setches do not exactly coincide with the setches of the original route. It is possible that when returning to the main route he did not recognise it as such, that is, he did not use this data to give the route tracking notices. I haven't been able to verify this new version yet.

Hello Orux!! Checked the update of the libraries, now in mapsforge the complex symbols such as osmc are correctly represented in topics like Elevate👍🏻, regarding the shading of hills for vtm it generates a doubt, would a new configuration be necessary in the app? When you turn on mapsforge shading in the app settings, no shading is shown in the vtm viewer. I made a mistake when quoting as a change in these libraries the implementation was earlier you can see it here https://github.com/mapsforge/vtm/pull/1189

Please also update the Traditional Chinese translation. Thank you!

It would be even better if the new or revised strings could be synchronized with each new release.

Hello, according to your capture, it seems rather that the app does not find the selected map to use it, since the route is seen and the thumbnail is created, does the selected map still exist in the app? You can try selecting another map for thumbnails, clearing cache, restarting the app, and forcing new thumbnails. Greetings troNpo

I changed map, cleared cache (all I know), restarted app - no success. and, it is even more wierd - if I go into properties of track without thumbnail and trigger refresh thumbnail command for that single track - voila, thumbnail is there ?!? ... so, there is some issue with bulk refresh anyway, I think.

Hello!

Refreshing the main list only regenerates thumbnails for tracks that don't have them. On each individual track's screen, it does force the creation of a new thumbnail.

The thumbnails you see with a black background are because the online map you're using is problematic; it's returning empty tiles.

When you refresh from the main list, those black thumbnails don't update because they already exist; the app doesn't recognize that they have no background.

I'll look into adding an option to force the creation of new thumbnails from the main list.

Hello Orux, would it be possible to create a waypoint for the beginning of the climber section? Voice alerts and graphics work well, but a visual reference of when the section begins on the Map is missing. Greetings

I add, this waypoint of start of the climber section could contain the information of said section, such as average slope, total, distance etc., we can do a study of the route and its sections on the corresponding screens of the sections of the climber, but not once the route is set in the main map viewer.

Hello Orux!! The brouter matching function/tool works well, if you use a profile and tolerance appropriate to the original route, taking into account that the generated route is through brouter why not open this route directly in the planner? It will be an important plus to finish retouching and accurately adapt the final route. It would be the closest step to modifying an existing route, the dream of many of us since always... PS: I would pay for it :)

Hello Orux!! The IOS version offers some configuration options that make the user's life much easier, things as simple as the size of the GPS cursor have always been a headache for many users, implementing this setting in the GP version (or in the beta) for sure would be very grateful for the community ;) not to mention the height adjustment of the well-known "cursor down" greetings!!

Hello, in the betas this error remains

Hi Orux, this was fixed in beta 13, thanks.

Regarding Android 11 or higher and the use of SD card storage: in this series of betas it is not allowed. If I remember correctly, this was possible before. With the use of Android Media, the app should be able to migrate data to the SD card. Other apps, such as BRouter, can still migrate their data to the SD card without issues.

About BRouter: when the BRouter files are stored on the SD card, OruxMaps does not have access to the profiles. The window to select the folder and grant permission appears, but the action never completes. Curiously, OruxMaps does have access to the segments, so it is still possible to plan routes using OM profiles.

I could swear we had already fixed this.

One of the advantages of using Android Media was being able to use external SD storage again. I can't go far enough back in time to say exactly when this stopped working.

Greetings.

Hi Orux,

I use Orux a lot for cycling, and I also have a Garmin Varia RTL515 radar. At the moment, I need to use a dedicated smartphone with the Garmin app to access the radar features. My smartphone is equipped with ANT+ and Bluetooth technology.

Some bike computers can read radar data from different brands and display the information. Do you think it would be possible to add this functionality to Orux as well? For beginning just an alert signal with a sound if there is vehicule and another sound the end of the alert would be enought.Of course, if that's possible and if other members are interested?

Best regards.

Hello Orux.
In the lab tests I noticed that the side board when we put the device horizontally, changes the number of data fields
With the device position setting to automatic, the side panel has 8 fields
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqe2LYb-8oMoWhwFkvNAu4dXBCx2XvLa48iK6xvFtW5CEt7D99gYdJt4gtqDhoRsFTkrkKP4kYJJgJ-Ksm0u3-_vkhUU1UHpCsgUoQ84nbSVFMmAPU0Nm3R4vRWyXNedEqFzax8nbOxSJfqPJZVAAeFK7efvZazY0WcatIMGReWuqmbX_mNGkC_Ij00QfC/s1600/Posici%C3%B3n_def_automatica.jpg)
The same board with the device's position setting in landscape loses the last field, spaces are added between the fields that make them stay at 7.

Hello everyone,

I use GPX tracks that can start at different locations.
These tracks don't contain any waypoints, only a start point and an end point, and the start point is not important for me.

When I load a GPX file in OruxMaps, I go to:
Options → Loaded route → More,
then I check Follow route + Route alarm, and in the recording options I select Start new track.

The app correctly calculates a route to reach the starting point of the track, which works fine, but that's not what I want.
For example, I would like to join the track at kilometer 5, without ever going through the official starting point.

Right now, with the route alarm enabled, OruxMaps keeps warning me that I'm off the route (which makes sense, since I'm heading toward km 5 using a different road).
It keeps trying to adjust the route, but without success.

So my question is:
Is there an option that warns me only once that I'm off the route, lets me ignore that warning, and then automatically detects when I join the track again, no matter where?
(Keeping in mind that the track may pass through the same place on the outbound and return sections.)

I enable route following from the beginning because, in my example, I only need notifications after kilometer 5 if I take a wrong turn.

Thanks in advance.

[/cita]
Hello, the easiest thing for what you want is to put the follow route button on the side button, this way you activate and deactivate the function when you are interested. The app cannot automatically activate the function only when you are on the route. Greetings troNpo
