Quote from: Andrea65 on June 07, 2025, 05:52:09 PMHello Orux,
The new beta 11.0.2Beta2 does not work on my Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G.
I upgraded today my Samsung from the old 11.0.0Beta10. Apparently the upgrade went smooth, but then at the first test, I am having at least these 2 blocking problems:
1) Barometric altimeter cannot be calibrated
2) GPS position is not achieved
Therefore, as-is, the application is totaly unusable.

Kindly be aware that in May the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G received a major OS upgrade, moving to Android 15 and One UI 7.0.

All the best, Andrea
Hello have you tried an installation from scratch ?
Best regards
For discarding an error when updating.

Hello Tronpo and Orux, no, I didn't try a new installation from scratch. But, today the app is running fine.
I don't know what could happen in these days to fix the problem, but I can guarantee I didn't do anything. I just did normal phone maintenance and applications updating as available.
So, concluding, I do not know what was blocking at the time.
Thanks for your support.

Buenas tardes Orux:

Hi Jose, can you please announce new betas with a reply? If you only modify the original post we don't get notifications. I just discovered beta 3 by chance...

ICONS ON THE STATUS BAR.
Hi Orux, I'm wondering if it's possible to click on the status bar and get the meaning of the icons displayed. I often have several (even 7 or 8) and I can't remember the meaning of casicuna.
Thanks always for everything you do!

Hello, in the manual you have a legend of what each symbol means.

Users always We will be asking you for direct action buttons according to our particular needs. Which is always extra work for you and endless buttons to choose from and configure 🤣.
You can save a lot of work by offering an empty button that the user can configure to use, adding settings that don't yet exist.
Even more than one for that button.

Something like this is what I requested here
We know your time is precious so you can help us by helping you 😁

Hello everyone, and to Jose in particular,
If I understood correctly (but I am not sure, and that's why I ask confirmation), the application can ONLY access the files in the "private" (Android/data/[Appname] and/or Android/media/[Appname]) folder
As a result, it is no longer possible to share in particular MAPs and DEM files between the current version and the BETA version ? This is particularily annoying due the huge size of such files....
Is that right ?

I understood that this limitation (if it really exists...) is due to Google and not to Orux.
But on the root, as much I understand that Google prohibits an app from accessing private data of another app, as much I do not understand what may be the reason to prevent an app from accessing files in a folder other than those managed by the Android system (eg the /oruxmaps folder). I could understand that it does not allow writing access, but why prevent reading access ???

It is right and irremediable.
For security reasons, I imagine that reading cannot be allowed either.
The only case within OruxMaps (beta) of using files from another folder is the remote use of vector maps such as Mapsforge and themes

I add that in order for oruxmaps to use some files like the others, it has to have direct access it cannot use them in a remote folder, that is, from another app
The same goes for maps, mbtiles etc

Actually, I understand less and less : OM beta indeed is able to read files anywhere, since loading of a GPX or KML layer can be done from any folder....
Why NOT the Maps a/o Dem, etc...

Edit : And why to be able to get such access (in "not private" folders) for MapsForge maps and Themes only, and not for other maps ?
Once again, I understand (not even sure...) these limitations for files that OM is supposed to update, but MAPs and DEM files are "by nature" Read ONLY files...
Really NOT understandable....

Laurent, focus on the big picture. Initially Android left maximum freedom to developers and users, eventually too many rogue apps pushed Google to take action, and it's crystal clear now that the future is an Apple-like walled garden ecosystem. Due to the complexity of the Andorid ecosystem we are currently in a transition phase, you can actually still use apps that have full access, but those cannot be uploaded to the Play Store. It's pretty easy to imagine that in a future even sideloaded apps will be blocked from accessing other app's data. Just accept that, searching for shortcuts can only backfire. I know it's an hassle but good SD cards are like 1€ for 10 GB, get a big one and be done with that; at least that's what I did.

Regarding the folders, /Android/data is where apps should store settings and no other app can access that. /Android/media is where they can store multimedia files so that they are protected, but with the right permissions other apps can have limited access. IMHO Jose is already taking risks allowing the users to store settings in the media folder, I wouldn't be surprised if this causes problems in the future; personally I would just put maps and dems there, feels safer. Everything else should be managed with import/export funtions from within the app, users should not mess with settings files; it was a necessity ten years ago, now it's no more. That said, I don't see the Beta able to access everything.

Hello Maki,
thank you for your answer, I agree with.... up to a certain extent !

About the SD card, yes I agree it's a good and cheap solution.... provided it's feasible ! Less and less smartphone have a place for SD cards... and in particular, mine (Samsung S23) do not have....
And even when it's feasible to add a SDCard, it's not always the case feasible to use it "seamlessly" with native file system. In my previous smartphone (Samsung A3), I had a SDCard port, but SDCard was "seen" as a specific group of folders, and then the files that have to be in /android/data/... or /android/media/... could NOT be stored on the SDCard...

About the need to protect apps data from other (potentially rogue) apps, I agree it's a real need, but ONLY for all that is "internal parameter" data. But for what is pure "user data" (as maps, dem files, cursors, tracklogs, etc.. in OM), it should be user's responsibility to choose if he wants to store them in a "protected area" or not , and have them (potentially, with "microscopic" risk...) "vulnerables".

An finally (last but not least), what I definitely cannot understand is why (and how ?) OM is able to read maps in mapsforge format, and associated mapstyles, from other folder than /android/data/... or /android/media/..., but not other maps. Or import GPX/KML files also from everywhere.

PS : I agree also with you when you consider that if, in this global picture, maps, dem, etc... have their place in /android/media, this shouldn't be the case of "settings" that should be rather in /android/data

Hello!

Preference data, although located in Android/media/, is encrypted. It's only decrypted if it's shared (in which case, personal data is extracted).

It's true that there's potentially sensitive data in other folders, such as photos and the Tracks database. But putting anything in Android/data/ now (and worse in the future) makes it nearly impossible for users to access it. And of course, there are quite a few users who manipulate that database directly!

There's also the option to give the user the choice... :)

Buenas Orux:
