GENERAL / Re: Oruxmaps 7.4.28 Obsoleta?

Quote from: Off-Track1234 on August 17, 2026, 12:25:50 PMNot sure about styles: at least 7.4.28 does not like zip

I confirm. For 7.4.28, Map themes have to be unzipped. OM 7.4.28 cannot read directly the zip file.

But AFAIK, with recent versions of OM, Map Themes can be either in a zip, or unzipped. So, to enhance "compatibility" between the two versions, and allow them to share everything, you only have to unzip all themes.

No, they are NOT.
If all features were present at all level of zoom, Mapsforge maps would be a lot and a lot and a lot larger ! And not really usable.

Correct.

To summarize, there are two different concepts :
- Which tags,features, etc.. exist in the map itself, depending on which zoom level
- among existing tags, feature, etc.. present in the map, which ones are displayed at which zoom level.

The first one is under control of map maker himself, and only him/her
The second one is under control of theme XML file, and can then be modified by end user.

But this modification can change what is shown at which zoom level only for tags, features, etc... present in the map. It cannot "invent" what is not in the map...

Yes, what you did is the right way of doing (change the zoom-min in theme XML file)... but is not enough.
It would be efficient... if the tag is present in the mapsforge file at this level.

But obviously, all tags and features are not present in the mapsforge map at all levels.

As a result, changing zoom-min and zoom-max in theme XML file, you can change at which level a feature appears or not in the rendered map, provided this feature exist in the mapsforge map at these levels.

In your case, you could only ask the provider of the map (OpenAndroMaps, I presume ?) to add this tag at a lower level than currently. If you have good arguments to do so, he could accept to do so. But only if your arguments are really valuable...

7.4.28 : no doubt, I'm using it (almost...) every day. And I couldn't understand how (and why...) Google could have an impact and block  an app not coming from its Store.

But for "paying" (GP a/o NG) application, it remains a doubt : According to several users, Google wants sometimes (rarely ?) to verify that you are OK and allowed to use the version, and prevent launching in case of network not active.

What I understand from various comments is that, at least, this check is not frequent, since some users have never been impacted.
But some others say that they have been sometimes unable to launch the app without network.
If these users are not liars, this mean that, at least sometimes, even if it is very infrequent, network is mandatory to launch the app.

I cannot prove it occurs, I don't know.
I only say that if it is true that it MAY occur, it could be very annoying in some cases.... and personally prevent me to use such an app.

And I remain very surprise that Jose, several times questioned on this thread, remains silent about the problem....

BETAS / Re: Is beta version is still working ??

FREE has two completely different meanings.
In french, we have two words : "Libre" and "Gratuit".

Applied to a software, "Libre" means what Richard Stallman describe, and José never said that OruxMaps was a Free (Libre) Software, but always said that it was what is commonly called a "Proprietary Software" (ie. the opposite of a "Free (libre) software").
It is his absolute right, and if someone is not happy with that, he is not obliged to use it...

For the second meaning, yes, in the past, Oruxmaps was free (gratuit), ie no payment was required to use it.
An this time too, it is the absolute right of José to change this aspect of his tool.

Personally, I regret it, and I remember that in a past discussion on this forum with José, I tried to convince him that let Oruxmaps free (gratuit), and ask to users a voluntary contribution could be even more "profitable" for him (and surely less profitable for Google, that wouldn't have any more its commission...).
José answered me that his experience was different, and that he never got as much money with voluntary contributions than with required payment...

Moreover, he explained me that when he began OruxMaps, he was young and free in his life (3rd meaning of "Free"...), but now was in couple, and had a child with major health problems, and so he didn't see the things the same way than before...
Maybe he regretted afterwards to have been so "personal" in his answer... Anyway, this exchange has been removed since from the forum...

And, BTW, I hope that his silence is not due to a more dramatic problems with his child...

My conclusion: Oruxmaps is a fantastic tool. Even if we all have some ideas that could improve it.
And since we find it fantastic, let's use it with pleasure, and a big big thank you to José.
Otherwise, you're all free to go your own way and use whatever you want (good luck to find as good as OM  ;) )

GENERAL / Re: Search for POIs offline (mapsforge maps)
January 23, 2026, 01:23:38 PM
I just did the test with rev 11.0.2beta3

A lot of differences.
But in particular, when searching on keyword, the search is no more LIKE "%name=%keyword%", but LIKE"%keyword%" since it retrieves any input text, whatever its position in poi_data.data
Eg, in the example of my previous post, a search on the postcode "66760" retrieves the hamlet of Fleuri in rev 11.0.2beta3, while not in rev 7.4.28

And other (great !) enhancements :
- Capability to search for ALL vs ANY of the keywords
- Post-filtering of the result (based on categories)
- Capability to change the POI database used for the search
- Capability to go back to the search screen, in order to change the search parameters and re-run.

Clearly, a very positive evolution.

Hi @Juanjo,

thank you for your detailed answer.

And yes, I am still on free version. The 7.4.28, to be specific (ie. the latest one).
In this version, there is no option to search for "Any" (as it exist now - I saw it on the 11.0.2beta3)

Moreover, I don't know how it works in the new versions, but I did some tests on my 7.4.28 (I did them with a "manually made" POI base), and actually, the different searches (on the different words) are all certainly done with a sql clause
where data like '%name=%keyword%'

I've been able to determine it, because input keywords are retrieved only if they are AFTER the characters "name=" in the data field. Not only what is inside the name= but also all what is in other "logical fields" (including these field names), provided they are after name=

To give an example, here is the data for a real POI taken from Andorra_oam.osm.poi file
addr:country=FR
addr:postcode=66760
name=Fleuri
name:ca=Florí
normalized_name=fleuri
osm_id=P/342269977
place=hamlet
wikidata=https://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q11935897
wikipedia=https://wikipedia.org/wiki/ca:Mas de Florí

A search on the keyword "Q11935897" retrieves this POI (because Q11935897 is after name= in the data field), but a search on "66760" do NOT retrieve it, because 66760 is BEFORE name= in the data field)

We could also retrieve it with a search on "osm_id", because this substring in in the global data field, and is after name= in the field (even if search on "osm_id" do not make sense....)

In case where the normalized_name= is itself before the name=, the starting point is all what is after normalized_name= (Normal. What is after the substring normalized_name= is in particular after the substring name= ...)

To get such a result, the only solution is that OruxMaps run sql requests "where data like '%name=%keyword%'"

I'll do some tests later on the rev 11.0.2beta3 (running this version in a VM (under Virtualbox), I can set a date in the past, to have the beta version still working)

According to answers I got from EMUX (Mapsforge's Author), OruxMaps CANNOT rely only on mapsforge's native search engine APIs.

See on MapsForge discussion mentioned above.

GENERAL / Search for POIs offline (mapsforge maps)
January 19, 2026, 05:33:43 PM
Hi all,

I just incidentally discovered that in such a search, if you enter several keywords separated by comma, you are searching for POIs that fit with ALL the input keywords. Ie. different keywords are searched with a AND between them.

Up to now, I thought that searching with "word1, word2" as keyword was searching for POIs matching "litterally" with the input string, ie. matching with word1 followed by a comma, followed by a space, followed by word2....
Actually, it retrieves all poi matching with "word1" AND matching with "word2", whatever wich one is in first.

This capability to search for POIs matching with several keywords, linked with a "AND" logic, is really interresting. Never mentioned in any of the users manual (at least those in a language I'm (more or less) able to read, french, english, spanish, german, italiano). Maybe it's written in Chinese or Korean documentation.....

On the other hand, do you know if there are syntax for other logical associations ?
Eg, search for POIs matching with ANY of the input keywords ("OR" logic), or search for POIs matching with a keyword but NOT matching with the second ("exclusion" logic), etc...

GENERAL / Re: OSM Map Styles

I don't know which Theme you are currently using, but the only solution is to customize this Theme to meet your requirements.
Technically speaking, this consists in modifying the XML file that drive your theme.
It is feasible.... but quite complex, and needs to understand how Mapsforge Render Themes are working.

You have first to modify the selection menu, to create the categories you want in place of the existing ones (easy part of the work), but afterwards to go inside the system of rules and their conditions to base the display on your new conditions.

Depending on how the theme is written, and on the modification you want to implement, this can be quite simple.... but generally VERY VERY complex.

As a matter of example, I have recently modified for my personal usage the Openandromaps Theme Elevate/Elements to separate the ski tracks display from other sports. It was easy to do, because
1) the drawing of ski tracks were clearly identified in the XML code,
2) and that I had "only" to add a new option, and condition this drawing (of ski tracks) to my new condition rather than to the global "sport" condition,
But I would say we were there in a very simple case...

A Mapsforge Theme may have several Style, and for each of these styles, there may be several options.
In Theme's definition, a default value exist for each of these options, that is the value taken by the option the first time the Theme is used.

My question is very simple : Is there a mean, in OruxMaps, after having changed one of several of these options, to restore all of them to their Default value ?

I've not found anything in the various menus, and I also tested to clean OruxMaps's cache, and also user managed caches in the app (raster, online, etc...) but I never went back to the default values of Mapsforge Theme options.

Is there another way of doing I missed ?

PS : BTW, if an option has the same internal name in two or more completely separate Themes, setting its value in a Theme sets it also in other Theme using it....

Personnally, I can't see the interest of these maps (that actually are not specific to Austria but cover the full world) that are not really better than OSM Mapnik....
But if you want to use them, it's up to you !

These maps can be get either with tiles 256x256 or 512x512
