BETAS / Re: Buying Beta
May 05, 2026, 06:22:15 PM
There is another option. My music player of choice, Neutron, uses the google account to authorize the software but you can download the all file access version from the website. It's a bit annoying because you lose the automatic updates; actually you have to pay attention to prevent the play store app auto-update the software as you can't disable updates on an app per app basis. Still, it works.

My fear is that at some point google will force this thing further removing old apps from the store, so people should really embrace the new way as soon as possible.

Personally, I'd be glad to pay for it again.

BETAS / Re: Is beta version is still working ??

There's free as in speech and free as in beer. And there is free as in "if you don't like this you are free to switch to something else", this is not a printer driver or OEM software that forces you to throw away some piece of hardware. And good luck with FOSS, I've lost count of dead projects on that side.

It's astonishing to see how people turns can against a nice person for egoistic reasons. For all we can know Jose can be in big trouble and all you folks care about is your little app. Please quit bitching.

Please folks, be kind.
Jose has always been clear about his passion and dedication to this project. I don't know what's going on, and I don't feel like asking, but I'm sure that if he pauses it he has very good reasons and he will do anything he can to keep the project alive. The current version costs next to nothing, works very well and will likely continue to do so for the foreseable future, I really see no reason to complain. You don't like it? Just switch to something else, if you can find it, or build your own.

Apparently nobody has questions and Jose is too busy to publish updates (although he was active a few days ago so at least we can hope he's going well...)

AFAIK the iOS version got an update recently, so I suppose the project is still alive. If you read the last messages from Orux on the forum I think it' pretty clear the current slowdown in developement is mostly due to lack of time and issues in dealing with Google.

GENERAL / Re: HGT files for DEM in 2025
December 07, 2025, 06:13:45 PM
I guess the best thing is to try. :-)
If I recall correstly you have to use ".dem + .hdr" format but I haven't tried. Personally, I think in most cases there is very little benefit, if any, using high resolution DEMs because the GPS position is not that accurate so you would be adding just noise.

As a side note, RGEAlti is not that good in a lot of areas; I mean, it's way better than SRTM but still old data, mostly radar based. If available I suggest to get LidarHD instead (https://geoservices.ign.fr/lidarhd), it's heavier to download but you can easily downsample to reasonable size with QGIS/GDAL. It's just another level.

Sorry for the off-topic but it isn't entirely off-topic. At the beginning of the year I wasted two months trying to switch to Linux. Despite really liking the Gnome workflow I eventually went back to Windows, amongst other things, because I'm stuck with QGIS 3.28 exactly because the XYZ export is seriously broken in later versions *and* installing an older version with the repository system was a PITA, and let's not even talk about making a backup copy of the app. With the evil, closed source, Windows I just run an installer from my archive and I'm done. I filed an issue about this on GitHub (https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/62319) and nobody cared. This is to say, it's not that opensourcing something automagically solves every problem, or grants that a project goes forward: ask Tilemill users for reference. I have serious doubts that someone would pick up the job for free if Jose opensourced the app.

If I understand what you mean you are probably using one of the basic interfaces that aren't configurable. Switch to the complete interface.

MAPAS/MAPS / Re: Cannot load mbtiles in v.10.7.4 GP

It's not Orux's fault, Google changed the rules. The free version you refer to is very old and distributed outside the Play Store so it doesn't have this limitation. You can read more here https://oruxmaps.org/forum/index.php?topic=40163.0

BETAS / Re: New beta 11.x version
July 18, 2025, 07:18:52 PM
Laurent, focus on the big picture. Initially Android left maximum freedom to developers and users, eventually too many rogue apps pushed Google to take action, and it's crystal clear now that the future is an Apple-like walled garden ecosystem. Due to the complexity of the Andorid ecosystem we are currently in a transition phase, you can actually still use apps that have full access, but those cannot be uploaded to the Play Store. It's pretty easy to imagine that in a future even sideloaded apps will be blocked from accessing other app's data. Just accept that, searching for shortcuts can only backfire. I know it's an hassle but good SD cards are like 1€ for 10 GB, get a big one and be done with that; at least that's what I did.

Regarding the folders, /Android/data is where apps should store settings and no other app can access that. /Android/media is where they can store multimedia files so that they are protected, but with the right permissions other apps can have limited access. IMHO Jose is already taking risks allowing the users to store settings in the media folder, I wouldn't be surprised if this causes problems in the future; personally I would just put maps and dems there, feels safer. Everything else should be managed with import/export funtions from within the app, users should not mess with settings files; it was a necessity ten years ago, now it's no more. That said, I don't see the Beta able to access everything.

Hi Jose, can you please announce new betas with a reply? If you only modify the original post we don't get notifications. I just discovered beta 3 by chance...

Quote from: orux on July 01, 2025, 12:16:10 PMI will add the top menus, like in Android version, if people like it.

As I said above I don't have iOS devices around, I'm contemplating in iPad but I never decide, maybe in late summer/autumn... So I'd feel guilty pushing you to spend time on something I don't even use yet. Also I honestly think that four interfaces (beginner, base, complete-unified, complete-classic) in one app is three too much. I asked because of two reasons:
1) I can't stand the unified interface. Sorry to be that harsh, but I tried multiple times to adapt without success. It's not just a matter of habit, I think it's fundamentally flawed, it just takes me double the time and double the space to do anything. I see the limits of the classic interface, but overall it's still better.
2) The iOS app is named "Oruxmaps +" and the blog post that introduces it talks about an Android version. So I was wondering if you are taking the Locus way, with the older classic version gradually superseded by a new "plus" version that gets rid of some legacy stuff to finally create a simpler and yet more powerful version. I like that idea, but I'm a bit afraid for the future of the Android version because that's not my concept of "simple".

GENERAL / Re: How to export compatible maps
June 28, 2025, 02:30:50 PM
I use mbtiles exported directly from qgis, search for XYZ tiles in the raster tools. However be aware that it is quite broken in recent releases, I'm stuck with 3.28 until it is solved, but it also depends on how the map is created so it may not be an issue for you even on more recent releases.

Is this public for all the world? If I do a search on the italian App store it isn't shown
https://www.apple.com/it/search/oruxmaps?src=serp
but if I tweak the URL chenging "it" to "es" it works

Sorry for the misunderstanding, actually I don't know Spanish so I relied on automatic translation and maybe I've read that one too fast.
